Using Video to Promote Language Development in the Classroom
Workshop leaders: Dr. Paula Winke & Dr. Dennie Hoopingarner
Workshop times: TBA

Workshop agenda: Will be posted Spring 2010

Teachers and researchers agree that video materials can enhance the learning environment in foreign language classrooms by providing rich, contextualized input. The combination of aural and visual cues naturally makes video input more comprehensible than audio alone. However, there are several uses of video that extend beyond listening comprehension. For example, video can be effectively used to teach sociolinguistic competence and in promoting output (both oral and written). This workshop will consider multiple uses of video as well as techniques for adapting authentic materials to learners of various proficiency levels. The workshop will address the following topics: choosing appropriate video (authentic versus scripted video materials and appropriate uses of each; sequencing a lesson with video, pre-viewing, during viewing, post-viewing); top-down and bottom-up activities for video use; creating selective listening activities for video segments; interactive, and communicative uses of video. This workshop also shows teachers how to use digital video recorders and computers to shoot and edit video projects. Topics include camera techniques, dubbing audio and adding subtitles, and output options. During the workshop, participants will learn how to copy their projects onto internet. Although computers and some video equipment will be available for participants to use during the workshop, participants are encouraged to bring their own camcorders or digital video cameras, so that they can become familiar with their equipment.

  Blending Language Classes 101
Workshop leaders: Dr. Angelika Kraemer & Dr. Scott Schopieray
Workshop times: TBA

Workshop agenda: Will be posted Spring 2010

In light of continuing budget cuts, many schools and universities are re-evaluating foreign language programs and some language programs face elimination. Particularly in urban districts, foreign languages play an increasingly prominent role where schools serve diverse ethnic communities and teaching languages remains critical. Research, such as a recent study by the U.S. Department of Education, shows that blended learning – a mix of online and face-to-face methodologies – can be more effective than either online or face-to-face learning by themselves. Blended learning can enhance quality of teaching and learning while at the same time help to cut costs and better prepare our students for their professional future. This workshop will walk participants through the steps of blending a language class that they bring with them to the workshop. We will start with our existing face-to-face courses and move through the process of blending them, along the way exploring how blended courses and learners differ from face-to-face, what makes a compelling blended environment, and considerations for teaching a blended course. We will also introduce you to different ways of incorporating digital content, using open-source learning management systems, and implementing Web 2.0 technologies. Participants in this workshop would also benefit from the Rich Internet Applications for Language Learning: Introductory Techniques workshop for specifics on some Web 2.0 programs.

Rich Internet Applications for Language Learning: Introductory Techniques
Workshop leaders: Dr. Dennie Hoopingarner & Mr. Vineet Bansal
Workshop times: TBA

Workshop agenda: Will be posted Spring 2010

This workshop is for language teachers who want to learn how to use CLEAR's free tools for creating interactive web-based multimedia language materials. The only computer skills that these tools require are point and click, copy and paste, and drag and drop. You get to concentrate on teaching, and don't have to worry about programming, uploading, downloading, or installing The tools can be used with any language, any textbook, and any level. Learn how to make web pages where your students can record audio files that are automatically uploaded to your virtual dropbox. Make a "mashup" that combines your text, pictures, video, and interactive language exercises into one web page. Create virtual conversations for your students where they listen to questions, and the program captures their responses automatically. All of these functions are available to you from within a web browser, with no special hardware or software needed. Come and experience the next generation of web-based language teaching! This workshop is limited to 20 people.

Rich Internet Applications for Language Assessment
Workshop leaders: Dr. Paula Winke & Dr. Dennie Hoopingarner
Workshop times: TBA

Workshop agenda: Will be posted Spring 2010

This workshop is intended for teachers who are already familiar with and are actively using CLEAR's Rich Internet Applications tools and are interested in using the tools for formative (i.e. portfolio) language assessment. Participants from this summer's Rich Internet Applications for Language Learning: Introductory Techniques workshop will also benefit from this workshop. The workshop will focus on integrating RIA materials with course management system (CMS) tools and other online environments that schools are using and application of the tools for formative language assessment. In particular we will focus on oral assessment and using RIAs to track oral proficiency gains over time (over an academic year or over the course of four years, for example). Part of the time will be devoted to consultation with instructors on their individual testing projects or applications of the tools for specific testing purposes. Prerequisite: Rich Internet Applications for Language Learning: Introductory Techniques workshop OR already actively using RIAs.

The Second ā€œCā€: Culture Teaching in the Language Classroom
Workshop leader: Dr. Senta Goertler
Workshop times: TBA

Workshop agenda: Will be posted Spring 2010

This workshop is intended to assist language teachers at all levels in integrating culture into the language classroom. We will discuss pedagogical principles for teaching culture. First, we will lay a theoretical foundation for teaching culture by discussing the constructs of culture, intercultural competence and transcultural competence. In this discussion we will consider historical, linguistics, political, societal, geographical perspectives as well as cultural artifacts. Next we will take a closer look at the cultural expectations as defined by the ACTFL standards and the Common European Framework of Reference. Most of the workshop time will be devoted to practical considerations. Pedagogical techniques for culture teaching will be presented and will include those enhanced by technology (e.g., telecollaboration, discussion boards) as well as more traditional techniques (e.g., mini research projects). Participants will experience sample activities taken from German and ESL classes from the perspective of the learner, develop their own activities, and exchange and discuss activities with the other participants. Participants are asked to bring a collection of culture learning activities and/or that you have successfully implemented in your course. These activities should represent a variety of language levels and types of activities.
